Adult Comprehensive Hearing Evaluations

It is vital that an individual with hearing or balance concerns receive an accurate, comprehensive hearing evaluation.

Depending on the medical history and abilities or needs of the patient, the audiologist may perform one or more of the following examinations:

Pediatric Hearing Evaluations

A child’s hearing abilities play a major role in speech-language development. Children living with unmanaged hearing loss can experience problems in their cognitive development, speech-language development and show underdeveloped social skills. There can also be safety concerns with untreated pediatric hearing loss as the child may not be able to localize where sound is coming from or may not be able to hear an alerting sound.

Depending on the medical history and abilities or needs of the child, the audiologist may perform one or more of the following examinations:

Visual Reinforcement Audiometry (VRA) is a way that audiologists use to test hearing on young children and others whose developmental needs require this style of testing. While the patient sits in a chair in the center of the room or on a parent or guardian’s lap, the audiologist speaks or plays sound through speakers. The audiologist will then teach the individual to look towards the sound by showing the patient a toy that lights up or is animated as a reward for looking toward the source of the sound. Once the patient is trained on this task, the audiologist then finds the softest sound the patient will respond to when played through the speakers.

Conditioned play audiometry (CPA), is a style of testing the hearing ability of a child, toddler, preschool age child, or someone with developmental needs that requires this style of testing. It involves teaching the patient to listen to sounds and respond that he or she heard the sound by completing an activity or game such as throwing a ball in a bucket, building a tower with toys, or completing a simple puzzle.

Infant Hearing Screening and Evaluations

Hearing loss is a fairly common birth defect. If your baby fails the initial hearing test, it doesn’t necessarily mean that a hearing loss exists. A failed hearing test can be the result of crying or excessive movement during the exam, loud noises during testing such as people talking or loud machinery outside the test room, or a buildup of fluid or debris in the ears. If your baby refers on his or her newborn hearing screening, he or she will receive a diagnostic auditory brainstem response test.

We are currently not offering these tests at our clinic. If these tests are needed, we can refer you to another clinic.

Hearing aid technology has improved time with advancements coming out on a regular basis. They can be discrete for the patient to wear and provide the most natural hearing experience possible for the patient’s auditory system.

Hearing Aid Repairs

Emerald Hill Audiology has close relationships with many hearing aid manufacturers and can help patients with their hearing aids regardless if they have been purchased at our clinic or elsewhere. We also have a special machine in-house that can help remove moisture from hearing aids should they be exposed to liquid.

Hearing Aid Warranties

New hearing aids purchased at Emerald Hill Audiology come with multiple warranties. The choice of level of technology will determine the length of the hearing aid warranty.

Assistive listening devices (ALDs) are devices that are designed to help individuals hear with or without a hearing aid.

Connectivity Devices
Connectivity accessories devices that allow you to wirelessly stream from hearing aids to devices such as television, smartphones, computers, or tablets.

Remote Microphones
Remote Microphones are very discrete and are often placed near or on the speaker who the listener is trying to hear. The remote microphone picks up the sound from the speaker and wirelessly sends what the speaker is saying directly to the hearing aids. These devices are particularly helpful in noisy situations, when in lectures, meetings, or in classroom settings.

Remote controls are small handheld devices that users can use to adjust the settings in the hearing aids. These devices are particularly helpful for individuals with dexterity challenges.
